Welcome to 2006-7 Meadows Library Media Aides

This year, you will write at least one paragraph every night that you had a Library Media Aide class during the day. The purpose for this assignment is to strengthen your descriptive writing skills and provide a record for yourself, your parents and for me about what you do each day during this class. I prefer 3 paragraphs of well-written, correctly spelled descriptive record of what you did during your Library Media Aide class. This blog participation is one rubric for this class. The more that you write the higher your grade will be in the class.

I want to be in this class because i was in it last year and i enjoyed it. I love working with computers and it is also nice to be in a small class because you tend to learn more that way. I also know how to work throughout the library since i was in this class last year so it will be even more fun because i will get the chance to do more in the library than before. In this class i hope to accomplish learning more skills in the library like using the smart board and other sytems and tasks.

Today in media I set up my blog. then a sixth grade class came in and I checked their books out. Then I put stickers on magazines that showed what the date on the magazine is. Then we put the magazines in groups.

At this point, in Media Aide, I would rather file books in alphabetical order because I haven't learned as much about the decimal system as I should have. I personally think I am better in Math than in Language Arts. I am excited to work in the media center. I think I will learn a lot more about how the library works and about the many resources it has to offer.

arden said...

I started media aide by creating a blog. Then a class of sixth graders came in which gave me the opportunity to learn how to check out books. Finally, in order to find the dates more quickly on magazines, we put stickers on the front cover.

On the second day of being a media aide, I put new barcodes on some reference books. You take the barcode over the old one and put tape over the new one so it wouldn't get ruined.

Last time in class we learned how to check in and check out books for the students. We got to practice this by having a 5th grade class come in and check out lots of books. Today we learned what to do when the books are in the turn-in bin and we have to check them back in. Then we have to magnetize it and see if the alarm goes off when it goes through the book detector system. If it doesn’t then we had to put a magnetic strip on it and try it again. Today we also learned how to blog.

zak said...

Last time I was in media aide we learned how to check in and out books and magnetize and demagnetize books. We laminated old books that we were ripped and torn.

Last time I was in media aid I learned how to check-in books and check-out books. I also learned how to magnetize and demagnetize books. We took ripped and torn books and laminated them. We also learned how to shelve books and learned which side was “fiction” and which side was non-fiction. Since I really enjoy typing I think I’m going to like media aid a lot!! I like the small class it makes it easier to learn!! I am very good with organizing stuff. I am really excited for this year to start!

Elizabeth said...

Last time in media aid I learned how to laminate books that have been damaged or destroyed. I also learned how to check in and check out books. Then I learned how to magnetize books so no one can walk out with a book. I can’t wait to see what else Mrs. Roof has in store for me and my fellow class mates but I bet it will be something exciting!

alex D. said...

Last time in media aide we helped laminate torn book covers to make them look much nicer. We also learned how to check in and check out books. Magnetizing the books was the most fun.so far media aide is my favorite class.I can’t wait to learn something new and different . I can’t wait to learn everything the library has to offer

Friday in the library, first Mrs. Roof explained to us some of the tasks we would be completing in the library throughout the year. Then she showed us how to check out and in book. Then for the rest of the period we filed magazines, there where a ton because it was all the magazines that came in over the summer.

Erin Hill said...

Today in media aide I learned how to see how many copies of a certain book there were. We did this by putting the title into the commuter and then pressing “copies” and then when we got the copies we had to write down the decimal system.

Elizabeth said...

Today in media aid I learned how to stack books on shelfs and put stickers on the books.

On Friday, I did three main thinds. First I set up this account, then, I helped the following people check in books; Alicia, Arden, and Tessa. The third and final thing I did was dating the magazines.

maggie said...

In media aide, we learn how to check in and check out people. A class came in our first time and we learned how to use the computer better. This time we checked in a lot of books and used the magnetizer. Then we brought the books through the book detector to see if it would beep. If it didn’t, we learned how to put a magnetizer in the book.

Today was my third time coming in to class and I was able to log on the site. These first couple days in class was ok but know that our official teacher is here where guessing it well be a lot better. We all can’t wait to actually start working on organizing books and learning a lot of other things.

kevin mertz said...

This is my third time coming to class and so far it has been fun.  I have a lot…well not a lot of friends in this class, but I have one who is the coolest. Even with only one friend in this class I know that it is going to be a great year. Hopefully I will get all @+’s this year. I didn’t have this class this year but in some other classes last year I made some enemies. But in this class I feel really safe. Well, you heard me loud and clear, Mertz is out.

hannah said...

Hannah Lewis-

Well, since Mrs. Roof hasn’t been here it hasn’t been that much fun. But since she is back I have a feeling that I am going to like this class. I just hope I can get used to the silence in the library; it kina freaks me out! Any who, I hope I start to really start to like this class and that I learn how to properly care for a library!

Jake said...

Last time I was here I had to write this paragraph again. I only have 1 friend in my class. I also got a tour last time I was here. I hope to get all A+’s this year. I just hope to be friends with the girls.

Today in Media Aide I first pre-filed books. Then a 6th grade class came in and we, the media aides, took turns checking out books. Finally, we up-dated magazines in the magazine racks.

Lexie B said...

Today in media aide I did four things. First I helped pre-file books so that they could be easily put back onto the shelves. Next, I Helped check in and out books. Finally, I helped sort and check in magazines.

caroline digilio said...

Today in the library we first stamped books with stamps that said “Madison Meadows Library” and then we magnetized each book and then we checked them by walking through the sensor and seeing if they beep. After that we sorted through the ones that had worked, and the ones that hadn’t. At the end of class we put in metal strips to some of the books that didn’t work when we tested them.

Today Ms. Roof came back. She gave us an introduction on the new check out system. Then the 6th grade Mrs. Wiens’ class came in to check out books. The kids chose their books and came to check them out. Their were some new kids at Meadows and they weren’t in the system yet so they had to write their names on a paper along with the number of their book and Ms. Roof would later put it in the system. So I checked out the people who were new and Alex checked out the people who weren’t new on the computer. That’s about all we did today.

On the 25th in media I did overdue books. What you do is that you have to highlight all the overdue books that had the 9/18 and lower. After you have highlighted al the overdues then the overdues that you did not highlight go into the teachers proper mail slots. I also checked a book in, you check it on the computer, then magnatize it, check to see if the alarm goes off, and put it on the cart to be fied away. All the books that were on the cart, I filed them away.

On Wednesday, October 11 there was a ton of books to be put away in the number section. So Ricki and I got right to it. Since there were so many Ms. Roof helped us out by putting the books in order on the cart. After that was finished there were just a few kids who came in to check in and out books. So while waiting for the kids to come to the counter we just laid back, relaxed, and talked.

On Monday we stamped a ton of books and put in magnetic strips. I also went on the computer and typed in book titles and either put a check if it was found or a circle if not. I did this while Brooke was on PowerPoint.

Today, in Media Aide, we mostly filed books. I do reference so I only did a few books. Right now, I am bloging in media aide. It is 2:39. It is 10/11/06.

What I’ve been doing in Media Aids is that we’ve been putting a lot of books in the shelves. Which is pretty annoying because a lot of books are in the wrong spots. Now I know how you feel Ms.Roof. That is what I’ve been doing in Media Aides.

Today we are trying to blog on line. We had it work a couple of times but now it just seems that it won’t no matter what. We did the silent Power Point announcements also. Savannah and I have a “taking-turn system” so every thing is quick and easy.

Today in Media aide we started off by trying to blog. Then Katie and I got started on typing the Power Point announcements. Today was great day in Media aide.

Last time in Media Aide we started out with checking in and magnitizing books. Then Mrs. Higgs' class came in to check out a book. When it was time for them to check out their book I was stamping their bookmarks with their duedates on them. Then Elizabeth decided she wanted to stamp so I started scanning their planner then their book. It was a lot of fun!!
But before I could check out to many books the bell rang and I had to go to my next period. Can't wait to see you next time!

Today in the library I didn't get to do much because I came in late. I checked in books and magnitized them. Then I checked if they set off the alarm. I didn't get to file them in the carts because the bell rang.

Maggie said...

Last time in media aide we went to the office, but they didn’t need help. Since they didn’t need help they told us to go to the nurse to help. The nurse gave us paper towels and we went to the copy room and clean off the counter. Then we filed away some of the students screening papers from last year.

Today in the library I checked in some books and magnitized them. Then I checked if they set off the alarm. After that, Mrs. Roof and I were changing labels on some new books because the 6th grade media aides mixed them up with some other books; I guess they weren't paying attention. We did that for the rest of the period.

alicia said...

In media all we did was put stickers on the sides of boks. How we did it is that we looked to see the authors first three letters of his/her novel. Then we had to look inside to see what the barcode number is. That's all we did the whole time.

Allyanna said...

Today in media aide, I first had to fix some books which had the wrong spin labels on them. After we got all that fixed I went on the computer and Mrs.Roof taught me a way on how to get the barcode number for the book. That was all that I did Today.

The library is closed today and a note sent me to help me in the office. First I folded papers and stuffed them in an envelope. There was only about ten of these, tax cut letters, and there was nothing else the office had for me to do. I read some papers posted on the wall but from that there was nothing to do. About ten minutes before my next period I helped my social studies teacher, Lee Meyer, by helping him make a test over the causes of the civil war.

Today in Media Aide I started by organizing magazines. To do this you
1. Find the magazine you want to replace and find its name on a magazine index card.
2. Say that this magazine has been received.
a. If it is a weekly magazine find the month and write in the next box the date of publication.
b. If it is a monthly magazine write the month of publication on its appropriate spot.
3. Write the month of week of publication on a small piece of blank mailing label and stick on to the top left hand corner.
4. You find the magazine which is in the magazine slot and get the old magazine out of its cover.
5. Put the new magazine into the cover and place it back in the rack.
6. The old magazines goes into the storage room.
I did step 4 and 5.
Next I added new books into the library and gave it a barcode. Finally I added books for meadows’ use.

Today in media aide I worked solo Savannah got checked out. I used the scanner in the back room to scan the books that Ms. Roof was getting rid of. That made a list of the weeded books and I checked what the other classes had done. That scanner was so old you had to hold it up to the book for it to work, I like to scan. Well that's all for now.

During the past few days, I have been cataloging like I never did before. Cataloging means that a new book that Ms.Roof buys for the library gets cataloged into the system. To catalog you must have Roof sigh on and open the main menu. You then usually type in the ISBN (International S? Book Number) which is on the back of the book into the type in-box and click enter. Then you find the title of the book in the list of books that it brings up. Pick the one with the A+ on it. If it is not there then click on another one and use it, but make sure it is the right book and that it gives lots of details. Then click “add copy” and fill in the next barcode. Roof recently attached a scanner. You can scan the next barcode number from a paper and tick it so you won’t use it twice. Change the call number and reduce the number to a number that has 3 digits left and right to the decimal maximum. Then type in the first 3 letters of the author’s last name. For autobiographies type “bio” and then the name the autobiography is over. Then write the price of the book. You can find this in the price list, the back of the book, or you ask Ms.Roof. Then type in the category the book belongs to, and then type in where Roof got the book from. This can be found in the price list, or else ask Ms.Roof. Finally, type in “PTM fund” in the funding source box, unless Ms.Roof tells otherwise.

In media I checked a couple of books in. You first take the book out of the art, then check it into the computer, magnatize the book. Then, check to see if the alarm goes to, you do this so nobody can steal the book. Finally, you put the books in alphabetical order according to the first three letters of the authors last name.
The fifth graders that did not go to Camp Friendly Pines were in the library working on stuuf. Then the sixith graders came in to get a presintation from Ms. Roof about their country reports. So I didn't do anything for the remaning period.

Today we were supposed to file catalogs into the counter top in the back. However, catalogs were so tight together that we couldn’t fit any in. We started to look at the dates the catalogs were published and look for duplicates. Any of these catalogs were through away. We made two and half trash cans fill, and still haven’t finished cleaning out old ones or filed any new ones. Some of then are super old saying 1998 to 1999!

The book I written and illustrated is called, To Planet X.
